The Medicine Hat Skateboard Association and the Connection Intercultural Association are seeking the support of Medicine Hat residents to truly bring Canada Day back to Kin Coulee.

After the success of last year’s two-day festival in the park, they’re hoping to continue to build on the momentum and make this year’s event even bigger and more representative of the different people and cultures which make up the city.

The event will kick off at 5p.m. on June 30 with Glow Up The Globe, an afternoon of food and cultural activities, before the evening turns into a large dance party with music from around the world on the Kin Coulee bandshell stage.

“If you’ve lived here for a good amount of time, you’ll remember what the old Canada Day was down in Kin Coulee,” said Davie James with MHSA. “I mean, from every angle of the coulees, you’re going to be able to see those fireworks late at night, but during the day there’s going to be food trucks, there’s going to be vendors, there’s going to be bouncy castles, there’s going to be Canada’s largest amateur skateboard competition.”

Canada Day begins with a city-wide yoga session and pancake breakfast, before residents can enjoy a full day of family-friendly activities, including bouncy castles, sports tournaments, food trucks and even a citizenship ceremony welcoming new Canadians.

However, all events take teamwork to put together, which is why they are putting the word out so early, said Yusuf Mohammed from the Connection.

“This is gonna be a community party, we need everybody. Talk to people in your organizations, in your businesses, your offices. Get involved,” said Mohammed. “We want to pull the biggest community party out there, and we want the community to own it.”

They are seeking vendors, volunteers and sponsors to help bring this party to fruition, and hope they can count on the community to do their part to make this a Canada Day to remember.

“We’re going to need more volunteers for this day, we’re going to need more people involved in general. If you’re interested in having a vendor, if you’re interested in advertising your business, please reach out to us,” said James.

More information on how to get involved can be found at canadadaymedicinehat.ca.
