Students are now able to submit their application forms to enrol in dual-credit programs and courses next year.

Tuesday the Medicine Hat Public School Division opened up online registration for programs that partner with post-secondary institutions to provide real-life career training while earning high school credits toward graduation.

Within the division there are two different program pathways available to students.

Students can enrol in a single course that runs for approximately 12-16 weeks and provides the opportunity to earn five Grade 12 credits as well as three college or university credits.

These semester-long courses include health care and nursing, e-sports and technology, sports management and performance, criminal justice and police, veterinary and animal health, business and agriculture.

MHPSD also provides students a scholarship pathway that includes multiple courses in a specific field moving toward certification.

Options available include a one-year veterinary technical assistant program that allows students to graduate from Olds College with their VTA certification.

Grade 11 students have the opportunity to enrol in the three-year health-care aide program that allows students to earn their full certification if they remain enrolled within their high school following graduation.

Students interested in a trades job but unsure of what speciality they would like to pursue may consider enrolling in the division’s three-year Introduction to the Trades program.

Working with Medicine Hat College, students are exposed to a variety of trades jobs including wielding, mechanics and pipe fitting before choosing a program to specialize in.

Tonight the division is hosting an information session for families for current Grade 9-12 students who are interested in enrolling in dual credit and work experience programs.

The two-hour open house session begins at 6 p.m. in the main hub of Medicine Hat High School.
