In an effort to ensure roads stay safe this Holiday Season the Medicine Hat Police Service is continuing a series of roadside check-stops this weekend. Some will be announced through the service’s social media as well as others that will not be announced and which could occur at any time over the next few weeks.

Last week police announced it would be increasing its number of check-stops heading into the holidays, and were able to check more than 870 vehicles last weekend at two separate locations.

Of 875 vehicles checked, four drivers were issued immediate roadside sanctions, as well as handing out two traffic safety tickets.

In total, 25 drivers received traffic safety warnings, and police report “several other warnings related to vehicle equipment and moving violations.”

“There are many options and no excuses for driving impaired,” reads a press release. “Call 911 if you suspect an impaired driver.”

Last year 330 drivers were charged under the Immediate Roadside Sanction program, police report as of Dec. 9, 2024, more than 200 local drivers face similar charges.

The province adopted impaired driving legislation in 2018 that included the introduction of mandatory alcohol screening, meaning drivers would be required to provide a breath sample forthwith at any traffic or check stop.

The roadside screening device used by traffic officers provides immediate readings to the operator, and drivers who pass will continue on their way.

“Every death and injury caused by impaired driving is completely preventable, we all have a responsibility when it comes to preventing impaired driving, whether by alcohol or drugs.”

Police remind motorists to plan ahead before heading out to celebrate the season.
