Wednesday was Medicine Hat College’s annual Career Expo, showcasing opportunities from the city and beyond for their graduates.
This year saw 56 different employers set up throughout Centennial Hall and the adjoining hallway, giving out information on their organizations as well as getting to scope out both students and job-seeking members of the community.
“All these employers are here to recruit and talk about their different career pathways and the career opportunities that are available with their companies. And we have a lot of new employers, which is really exciting to us,” said MHC student career services assistant Shelly Drefs.
Some of these new employers include Skandador, Halderman Acres, and URide, who are all relatively fresh to the area.
Drefs said the expo is an exciting opportunity for them to connect students with the different pathways that are available to them after graduation, which can otherwise be daunting to navigate.
“We just want to give them this venue where the employers can come in and highlight all the different pathways that they have available, how they apply and how students can really stand out from other job seekers,” said Drefs. “And then on the flip side, it’s also bringing in the community, because we are community oriented organization ourselves.”
This year saw a high-and-steady turnout over the course of the event, with the halls full of curious students and community members well into the afternoon.
Several of the employers hosting tables commented that they had been busy for most of the day, speaking with those who were interested in pursuing careers in the field.
Tables ran from healthcare, government services, law enforcement from several nearby communities, as well as various trades and familiar faces such as Co-op and Costco.
“It’s been an awesome mix of a lot of students as well as people from the community, which has been really excellent, a lot of really eager job seekers,” said Megan Brodeur, industrial trades apprenticeship coordinator with Tacten Industrial Inc.
“Even if some of them aren’t quite done their apprenticeships, we’ve been telling people to check back with us in the next few months for different projects that are coming up, it’s been really good,” said Brodeur.
