Thursday night held the reception for the annual “Best of Last” art showing at Medicine Hat College, which stands as a celebration of the last semester and inspiration for new projects to come.

The art show is held at the beginning of each year, said MHC instructor Craig Cote, and features carefully selected pieces from every class.

“It’s just a good representation of our program and a good indication of the type of work that they do here, and the range, and it helps the new students see the calibre and variety of work that they’ll be doing,” said Cote.

The exhibition is being held in the One on One gallery, which is unique in that it doesn’t have a singular curator. Each show is curated by different members of MHC staff. For this show, Cote did much of the curating and installation of all of the works.

The Best of Last art show has become something of a tradition, said Coordinator Jessica Plattner, by highlighting the works of last semester’s students for the past seven or eight years.

“We always have the show installed in time for new student orientation, because it’s a nice way to introduce new students to all of the cool things that they’ll be doing in this program here,” said Plattner. “So each piece that you see has been selected from classwork. It’s all based on specific assignments.”

Pieces varied from paintings, prints, and various sculpture works, all selected from various assignments. Plattner said that it is remarkably difficult to select only a handful of pieces, and congratulated all of the students who had pieces displayed in the gallery.

She also expressed gratitude to those from the larger community who visited, and encouraged them to look at the full calendar of shows planned, which is available on the MHC website.
