The Medicine Hat Root Cellar wants a city council member on the board of the local food bank.

In a presentation to council Monday, board chair Warren Stark outlined the increasing need to provide services while it receives no set funding from any level of government and local donors are beginning to feel fatigue after five years of increasing numbers

Stark invited all council members to tour the Maple Avenue facility, and also requested that a member of city government join its board.

“It will help amplify the voices of the 4,000 residents that we serve (monthly),” said Stark, who said the entity served 932 clients per month in mid-2019.

Survey says ‘wait ’til October’

An overview of city satisfaction survey which was supposed to be presented Monday night will be heard instead in early October.

The absence was noted at the beginning of the agenda on Sept. 16, and required due to the length of the agenda that night.

“We know people in the community are eager to see those results,” said Coun. Alison Van Dyke, who added more time would be available for discussion at the later date.

Stauth retires

Council and staff noted that Monday was the final council meeting for retiring public services managing director Brian Stauth.

The former fire chief took over as the head of the public services division in December 2022.

“It’s a difficult world (public service), and you’ve managed it gracefully,” said Coun. Ramona Robins, chair of the public services committee.

Incoming managing director Joseph Hunter will join the city Oct. 1 after holding the position of CEO in the Town of Nobleford.
