Local Terry Fox Run organizers say they’ve already beaten a fundraising goal ahead of this Sunday’s event, but are hoping for a finishing kick to push totals and participation even higher.

Keith Walker told the News that donations and pledges have reached $14,000 on their webpage of the national Terry Fox Foundation, and they expect 250 to 300 Hatters to participate.

“We’re really hoping to go higher than that,” said Walker, noting there’s still time to donate to support cancer research.

“And we’re hoping that people will wake up on Sunday, see the sunshine and say, ‘Hey, let’s go do the TerryFox Run.”

This weekend will mark the second year that the Sunrise Rotary Club and Ignite Rotary Club has organized a public run to honour the memory and continue the mission of Fox and the “Marathon of Hope.”

Registration begins at 9:30 a.m. on Sunday at the main entrance of Medicine Hat College ahead of the race at 10:30 a.m.

The course is a three-kilometre loop of the college on paved pathway, known as the Sunrise Rotary Trail, which should be easy to negotiate for runners, walkers or those with walkers or wheelchairs.

Light snacks, water and coffee will be provided, along with some activities for children provided by the Medicine Hat Public Library and other groups.

Donations can be made at the national website (run.terryfox.ca), and attributed to the local race by searching for Medicine Hat as a location.
