This year set a new record for participants in the Community Foundation of Southeastern Alberta’s Youth in Philanthropy (YiP) Program.

The program is designed to help motivate philanthropists of the future, getting students and members of youth clubs involved with organizations in their area.

“The program gives students hands-on experience working as a team and with local charitable organizations to help the community thrive. Students and youth groups form a YiP committee, research their community’s greatest needs, and connect with local charities that address those needs,” said CFSEA.

This year saw 12 groups become involved with the program, a record number of YiP committees, helping to distribute $14,040 to 13 unique charities.

“I thought it was pretty cool going to the Ronald McDonald House because I learned stuff I didn’t know before and I got to see what it was like in there and see how kids and parents live there for a bit at a time. And now that I know more about it, I am happy to donate to them. I’m glad I had this opportunity.” said a YiP participant from the Redcliff Youth Centre. The centre raised $1,200 for the Ronald McDonald House.

Organizations that received donations include HALO, the Prairie Gleaners and the Women’s Shelter Society, among others.

“The Youth in Philanthropy grants are made possible by donors who contribute to the Youth Endowment Fund. Donations to this fund are never spent, rather, the investment income earned each year is distributed throughout the community,” said CFSEA.
