The Monsignor McCoy Colts Sr. baseball team didn’t let off the gas Tuesday night in playoff action.
The Colts put up 17 runs in four innings to beat the Kate Andrews Pride 17-0 in provincial quarter-finals action.
Head coach Cole Schreiber says he could tell from warmups they had the compete they needed, and he saw it flourish come first pitch.
“We were dialled in, we were ready to go with a lot of focus, something that was, you know, big for us early in the year but I could tell it was we had a different demeanour coming into today,” Schreiber said. “We kind of meant business, for us to come out, Carlson have a good first inning and avoid some damage early, then shut them down. Then for us to get on the bats the first two innings and put up a lot of runs was pretty crucial.”
Carlson threw four innings without allowing a hit, surrendering just two walks and recording six strikeouts to earn the win. The game was called in the top of the fifth inning due to rain and thunder.
Schreiber credited Carlson for their ability to have the early success in the game.
“Anytime you can stop them in the first inning, avoid any momentum going to the other team, that’s massive for the bats,” Schreiber said.
“Throughout the game he was just dominant with strike after strike after strike. He was mixing pitches, our defence was great and Pryce (Velichko) behind the plate threw a guy out in the one inning to stop a rally there for them and that was huge as well. So with Cole, we knew what we were going to get from the strike thrower, you know you’re always going to get that and he was locked in.”
The Colts’ offensive attack was led by JJ Harnett who had three hits with an RBI and scored a run, and Asha Frey had two hits including a triple, four RBIs and three runs scored. Fischer Haysom hit a three-run, inside the park home run and drove in five RBIs.
Makhi Carriere and Pryce Velichko had two hits each and Kolter Gans chipped in with a two RBI double and scored three runs.
The Colts will face Catholic Central in semifinals action Thursday in Lethbridge, looking to advance to their third-straight Alberta Premier Baseball League finals.
McCoy played Catholic Central on May 22, falling 6-2. It’s a matchup Schreiber says they want and will have no issue getting up for.
“Our guys are really looking forward to that matchup and I know we’re going to be pumped,” Schreiber said. “We’re going to be excited and ready to compete because we kind of want that one.”
