The Medicine Hat Police Service has announced two ‘Coffee with Cop’ events and an open house and barbecue over a two-week period between May 23 and June 3. Later in June the city’s best will meet on the softball diamond for the annual Battle for the Badges police versus firefighters game.
Residents are invited to have coffee with police at the Poolhouse Cafe & Roastery from 9-11 a.m. on May 23 to meet chief Alan Murphy and members of the executive team. Recruiting and downtown patrol units will also be in attendance.
These events will have no agenda and provide citizens a chance to ask questions and voice their concerns.
On June 1 the police are hosting an Open House & Chief Gord Earl Leadership Legacy barbecue and scholarship presentations between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m.
Two days later on June 3, police will host another “Coffee with a Cop’ event at the Veiner Centre.
Later in the month police and fire departments will be gearing up for some friendly competition as they get set for their annual softball game that raises money for the Root Cellar with the help of the Medicine Hat Mavericks.
Police say they have plans to redeem themselves and get back in the series this year as firefighters have proved to be the elite force on the field, winning four of six matches against the cops.
“They beat us quite handily last year,” says Const. Mitchell young. “So we need to come back pretty strong here this year. There’s definitely some pride involved and some competitiveness.”
However, no matter who has the highest score at the end of the match, the real winner from the Battle of the Badges match is the local food bank.
“The most important thing is we’re doing it for a good cause,” says Mitchell.
Tickets are on sale at the front reception of the police station or at the gate at Athletic Park for $12 each.
June 15, police are hosting an auction including bikes. Items and can viewed and bid on online on the Gateway Auctions website.
