The Medicine Hat High Hawks wrestling team stood their ground at the ASAA rural provincials last weekend.
The local wrestling club had seven athletes compete at the ASAA’s rural competitions held in Stirling last weekend.
In the 50 kg class, Bahati Butoyis placed third. Janvier Bukurus won gold in the 53 kg class.
In the 59 kg weight class, Nathan Mackinnon placed fifth to qualify for provincials.
Mazen Al-Yassine finished second in the 62 kg weight class.
In the 90 kg weight class, Clark Campbell finished fourth and William Kozakewich placed first in the 108 kg category.
Kayen Ivey had a silver medal performance, nearly missing her chance at gold in the 70 kg female division, according to coach Darren Klein.
Zayna Willoughby finished third in her division and will qualify for provincials.
Truman Hellawell, who wrestles with Hat High but attends Crescent Heights, captured himself a bronze medal. He is also off to provincials
Both Hat High’s girls and the boys teams were runners up for team awards.
Provincials are to be held in Edmonton Mar. 9 and 10.
