The Hat weathered record cold over the weekend as temperatures sunk past previous marks set 19 years ago.
Three daily records were officially set while Monday – the start of a warming trend – started off colder than the same day in 2005 when a cold snap was one for the history books.
According to Environment Canada, lows of -36.4C on Friday, Jan. 12, -41.4C on Saturday, Jan. 13, and -40.3C on Sunday, Jan. 14, were all new lows. They were all several degrees colder than previous records for the specific days, all set in a week-long deep freeze in 2005.
Monday’s low was recorded at -37C just after midnight, which unofficially overtook the record low of -34.7, again set in 2005.
During the night however, the temperature slowly rose and sat 14 degrees warmer at -20C by 2 p.m.
The expected low of -26C overnight into Tuesday was again predicted to trend warmer, leading to the potential for snow in the afternoon.
Highs just above freezing are expected to arrive by Saturday.
