Windchills in the region could hit -40C at times this week

Arctic air causing cold weather alerts in Western Canada is also leading to warnings in the northern U.S. as -40F is expected in Havre, Mont. on Thursday.

The Fahrenheit and Celsius scales meet at the -40 mark, and that is the expected low in Onefour, Alta., on Friday night as well as across the international boundary in Hill County, Mont.

Weather agencies in both nations warn of the risk of frostbite and other health effects due to exposure.

The U.S. National Weather Service predicts up to six inches of snow could fall at Havre between Wednesday and Saturday when a low of -37F is forecast overnight.

A winter weather advisory warns that windchill could fall to -40F through Friday at Havre.
