More bursary awards are available for Medicine Hat College students studying health care.

The college recently received a $50,000 donation from the Medicine Hat Health Foundation.

Over the next five years, health-care students in eligible programs will be able to apply for up to $10,000 annually in bursary awards that range from $1,000 to $2,000. Students will have to demonstrate financial need and be in a program with a helping and caring outcome.

The college says the donation will help reduce barriers for students and open doors for opportunities for in-demand jobs.

“The support from the Medicine Hat Health Foundation enables individuals to pursue careers that will be needed to maintain our health-care system,” says Jason Openo, dean of MHC’s school of health and community services.

Students may apply through the scholarship and bursary application, which opens each year on March 1.

Supported programs include health-care aide, occupational/physical therapist assistant, speech language pathologist assistant, practical nurse, nursing and paramedic.

“We feel very privileged to have the opportunity to help support those who are studying hard to become tomorrow’s surgeons, physicians, nurses, paramedics and therapists,” says Heather Back, executive director with the Medicine Hat Health Foundation. “Our long-standing relationship with Medicine Hat College is crucial to this, with many of their students undertaking their practicum studies in our hospital.”
