The jobless rate in rural southern Alberta sat at 4.3 per cent in the combined Medicine Hat-Lethbridge region last month, according to figures for November released by Statistics Canada.
The figure is one percentage point higher than November 2022, and about half a point lower than the previous month.
That translates to an estimated 7,400 workers without employment in the region that boasts a total workforce of 171,000.
The Alberta rate rose to 5.3 per cent, up two-tenths of a percentage point compared to one year earlier, to equal the national rate during the month.
The local rate was third lowest in the province as Camrose-Drumheller continued to fall and now sits at 2.5 per cent, and Northwest Alberta’s rate lowered to 4.4 per cent.
Red Deer posted the highest rate in Alberta at 7.9 per cent. Calgary and Edmonton were at 5.4 and 5.8 per cent, respectively.
Saskatchewan posted the lowest rate of any province in November at 4.1 percent, followed by Manitoba and Quebec (both at 4.5 per cent).
