While conducting research for an upcoming trip to Mexico, associate director with the Medicine Hat Skateboard Association Jade Ritchie discovered there was a local need for feminine hygiene products.
Many women in Medicine Hat must choose between buying food or purchasing hygiene products. As a result, the MHSA has launched a campaign to end period poverty in the city and has partnered with the Root Cellar to collect and distribute products locally.
Melissa Mullis, executive director of the Root Cellar, said, “We are so excited to be partnering with the Medicine Hat Skateboard Association to address period poverty in our community. It means a lot to us to come alongside this incredible community organization to support us as we continue to commit to having period poverty products on our shelves for our families. Thank you to everyone who supports this incredible initiative.”
The campaign began this week and will run through until Dec. 13, with drop-off locations at the Root Cellar, Save-On-Foods, Mr. Lube, Station Coffee and Western Financial. MHSA is holding a silent auction Dec. 3 at 7 p.m. in the Ballroom of the Beveridge Building at 620 Second St. SE, and products can be dropped off at this event as well.
