Miywasin Friendship Centre, Firekeepers Women’s Society and Medicine Hat College will host the second annual community Truth and Reconciliation Day event Saturday at the college..

Elder Charlie Fox will provide an opening prayer, which will be followed by a walk.

“The walk is to remember all the kids who didn’t come home and to honour our survivors of residential schools,” said Nicki Eastly, Indigenous support specialist at MHC. “This day and these events help everyone to acknowledge the trauma and pain that have been caused, but also put an emphasis on the opportunity for change. It can also be a reminder of how far we have come and the work still needing to be done.”

The walk is about 1.5 km long and there will be a shortened version available for those who need it. Following the walk, Indigenous Elders will share stories, while an honour song and a few songs of round dance will complete the afternoon.

Bring a lawn chair and dress casually, though attendees are encouraged to wear an orange shirt to show solidarity with Orange Shirt Day, which is recognized on the same day as Truth and Reconciliation.

The event goes from 2-4 p.m. outside the front entrance to MHC. Parking is free and restrooms will be available inside the college. For more information visit the MHC website.
