Work in 2022 saw the winding road dug up as new water and sewer lines were installed, the roadway improved and the intersection at Fifth Avenue changed. That was halted in late summer to accommodate the coming school year, according to a city release Wednesday, that states work to complete the project over two months will begin Tuesday, July 4. That will result in the complete closure to vehicles, which will be diverted to Fifth Street and S. Railway Street. It will also close the portion of the Sixth Avenue Trail which crosses Hill Road and the road’s adjacent sidewalks. Taxes due Friday The last day to pay 2023 property taxes in Medicine Hat without penalty is June 30 unless other arrangements or agreements are in place. Payments can be dropped off or made at the counter until the end of business that day at 4:30 p.m., or with an accredited financial institution or bank. Officials have said in the past more than half of the city’s 30,000 tax accounts take advantage of electronic banking or instalment plans. The city’s 2023-24 budget includes a requirement to collect $84.8 million in property tax revenue toward funding a $148-million spending program this year. The difference is made up by $33.8 million in operating income, a combined $18 million from investment returns or utility profits, as well as an accumulated surplus. 11
