Racing season kicks off at local drag strip

Saturday's Junior Lightning champion Justus Schaan stands in the winners circle at the Medicine Hat Drag Racing Association strip.

The engines were fired back up at the Medicine Hat Drag Racing Association for opening weekend at the strip, and local drivers finished in the final for nearly every division.

Medicine hat’s Paxton Frey won Saturday’s Junior Thunder event, defeating fellow Hatter Ella Jennings in the final before falling to Desert Blume’s Saxyn Schaufle in Sunday’s final.

Dunmore’s Justus Schaan bested Allyson Keim, out of Claresholm, to win Saturday’s Junior Lightning event. Hanna’s Jeff Orr topped High River’s Cole Caron to win the event Sunday.

Cypress County’s Paige Munsch won the Junior Street event on Saturday, defeating Raymond’s Ryder Harrison in the final. Dunmore’s Gray Schaan rebounded from a semifinal finish on Saturday by winning Sunday’s event over Munsch in the final.

Medicine Hat’s Ashley Zeller won the Sportsman event on Saturday, topping Calgary’s Kathie Archambault in the final. On Sunday it was Medicine Hat’s Dean Adie who took the event by defeating fellow Hatter Blair Thorpe in the final.

Hatter Perry Bell fell to High River’s Monty Beagle in Saturday’s Pro final. Cypress County’s Herb Nagel won the event on Sunday after beating Coaldale’s Fred Tolsdorf in the final.

In the Super Pro event, Calgary’s Larry Peters won on Saturday, beating Regina’s Isaac Stettner in the final, then Brooks’ Jason Kendel won on Sunday by defeating High River’s Morgan Caron in the final.

Medicine Hat’s Zach Toth settled for runner up to Airdrie’s Steve Campbell in Saturday’s Pro Bike final, but responded by winning the event Sunday over Strathmore’s Mike Brown.

Maple Creek’s Kindi Opsal won Friday’s Street event, beating Airdrie’s Buz Buzunis, while Medicine Hat’s Keith Easton won the Friday Night Bike event over fellow Hatter Daniel Ternes.
