Spring rodeo kicks off Stampede season

The Medicine Hat Exhibition & Stampede 2023 season got underway this weekend.

The Broncs & Honky Tonks Spring Rodeo was held this weekend at the Cypress Centre, with the three-day rodeo marking the first event ahead of the summer Stampede season.

Maple Creek’s Jared Parsonage took home $1,632.87 for first place in bull riding, registering an 86-point ride on Duane Kesler Championship Rodeo’s bull, 744 All Bananas. Jacob Gardner of Fort St. John, B.C. finished only one point behind Parsonage, taking home $1,351.34 for his second-place ride.

Taylor Manning was the big winner of the weekend, as the product of Edson, Alta. took home $2,575.90 for her first-place ride of 12.55 seconds in the ladies barrel racing. Bradi Whiteside of Longview, Alta. finished in second with a 12.67 ride, taking home $2,189.26.

Murray Pole from Erskine, Alta. won the tie-down roping competition with a time of 9.8 seconds, winning $2,053.90. Clay Elliott finished 0.1 second behind Pole for second place, taking home $1,786.

Logan Hay took first place in saddle bronc riding with an 84.5-point ride on Duane Kesler Championship Rodeo’s 311 Bail Bond, earning him $1,613.79. Ben Andersen was one point short for second place, with a take-home of $1,335.55.

Tate and Kagen Schmidt of Barrhead, Alta. won the team roping competition with a time of 3.8 seconds, bringing home $2,010.66 each. There was a tie for second place with Brett McCarroll/Luke Skocdopole and Brady Chappel/Colton Klassen each registering times of 4.8 seconds for a take-home of $1,617.27 each.

The steer wrestling winner was Tanner Milan, who had a time of 4.1 seconds in his run, earning $1,994.45 in winnings. Stephen Culling was in second place with a time of 4.3 seconds, earning $1,734.30.

Pascal Isabelle was the top bareback rider with an 85-point ride on Duane Kesler Championship Rodeo’s 77 Fabio, winning a take-home of $1,499.30. Two riders tied for second place, with Linden Woods and Dantan Bertsch each registering 83-point rides earning take-homes of $1,111.55 each.

Hayden Mulvey won the junior steer riding competition with a 73.5-point ride, winning $343.38. Hayden Mackay came in second place, with a 71.5-point ride and a $257.54 take-home.

Next on the Stampede schedule is the World Professional Chuckwagon races, running June 22-25, a month before Stampede kicks off on July 26.
