Medicine Hat’s Veiner Centre is raising awareness of its Meals on Wheels program and recognizing program supporters through the March for Meals campaign.
Running through the month of March, the campaign shines a spotlight on the local program, which provides nutritious hot meals to seniors and homebound community members.
“Last year, our team and our volunteers delivered over 30,000 meals,” Larry Matheison, president and CEO of Veiner Centre’s parent company Union for Generations 50+, told the News. “On average, we’re delivering to 188 clients a week. And (the program) has a great impact, not only for the food security, but for the wellness checks on vulnerable members in our community (it provides).”
The local program, believed to have been in operation since the 1950s, is partially funded by the city, but also relies on donations to cover all remaining operating fees.
“(Clients) essentially purchase the meals, but we raise donations so that we can keep the costs low and offer subsidized rates to those who require it,” said Mathieson. “So, our goal is $10,000 we hope to raise in this campaign.”
Another goal Mathieson and the local MOW team hope to achieve through the month-long campaign is to increase volunteer numbers.
“The program is also driven and largely supported by volunteer time and effort,” said Mathieson. “So, we definitely are reliant on volunteer support.”
The program currently has 48 volunteers, but organizers are seeking an additional 10 to assist in regular meal deliveries, though individuals who are not able to commit to a set schedule are also invited to assist when able.
Several notable Hatters will be showing support for the program by volunteering throughout the month, specifically during Veiner Centre’s March for Meals Champion Week, Mar. 20-24.
