A former Brooks MLA, Alberta finance minister and adviser to Danielle Smith during her time as leader of the Wildrose Party has been appointed to the board of the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta.

Lyle Oberg, a medical doctor who was a progressive conservative MLA for Brooks-Strathmore from 1993 until 2008, was made a public board member of the professional governing body, according to orders in council list, published Dec. 22.

He will serve until December 2025.

Oberg was minister of education in the 1990s and was briefly finance minister under premier Ed Stelmach.

He publicly opposed the creation of the health super board and publicly announced after he left politics in 2008 that he would join the Wildrose Party as an adviser.

More recently, Oberg has worked to create several health-focused businesses, including several medical cannabis endeavours as well as MYND, a company focused on using psychedelic chemical psilocybin in mental health therapy.

The same order in council rescinds the appointment of Levonne Louie to the college’s board effective in the fall of 2023. The retired executive with several junior oil and gas producers also sits on the board of the Law Society of Alberta, the Calgary Convention Centre and the Medical Council of Canada.
