A 54-year-old man is in custody and facing numerous charges following a high-risk incident at a residence in the 200 block of Southlands Boulevard early Monday.
Police responded to the scene at approximately 6:30 a.m. following report of a domestic altercation between a woman and her former partner involving a weapon.
Upon arrival, the man threatened officers with an unspecified weapon, prompting response from the Medicine Hat Police Service’s tactical team. However, police were able to safely apprehend the man following several hours of negotiation.
The man has been charged with possession of a weapon dangerous to the public, two counts of assault with a weapon, three counts of uttering threats and two counts of breach of probation. He will remain in custody until a judicial interim release hearing is held.
The man’s identity is not being released at this time, nor is that of the woman, whose physical injuries did not require medical treatment, but is receiving support from MHPS’ victims assistance unit.
