Global renewable power developer RES has received approval to build a major solar facility in the M.D. of Acadia.
Big Sky Solar would comprise solar arrays on seven quarter-sections of privately owned land located about 2.5 kilometres west of the hamlet of Acadia Valley.
The 340,000 panels, collector network and new substation would be able to put 140 megawatts of power on to the provincial grid in peak operating conditions, according to the approval issued by the Alberta Utilities Commission on Oct 24.
The facility had been subject to a public comment period since August.
Renewable Energy Systems Canada states it plans to begin construction in May 2023. The approval comes with an in-service date at the end of 2024.
No budget estimate is provided, but industry standards could place the figure at $200 million.
