Youth in Oyen’s East Sounding Creek 4-H Beef Club have seen firsthand the positive impact their efforts can have on the community, following sale of the club’s charity steer.
Club officials decided last year to raise a charity steer; something the club has not done for more than a decade, 4H parent Shelaine Woods said.
Officials didn’t expect to raise much money from the steer, but thought it a good learning opportunity for members. All were surprised when the steer sold for more than $63,000.
Sale proceeds were donated to HALO, while the meat went to the Oyen and District Community Food Bank. Club members personally visited each organization to deliver the money and learn more about what it will go towards.
“We are extremely proud of the support from our community and the success of our fundraiser,” Woods said. “We set out to help our members learn the value of community stewardship and touching as many lives as possible. And I think we succeeded.”
