Cancarb is again producing carbon black as the Medicine Hat plant undergoes planned maintenance this month, but officials state further repairs are required on a waste-heat recovery system that provides power to the City of Medicine Hat.
Dated information appeared in the News over the weekend, stating both the production line and power plant had partially restarted.
Company officials told the News Monday the power plant will require further repair and remain off line while evaluation is completed.
The generator’s power production – up to 42 megawatts – has been sold to the city’s utility system under contract since it was commissioned in the early 2000s.
Municipal supply shouldn’t be an issue however, as city officials told the News on Monday the city’s own power expansion, the 44-megawatt Unit 17 turbine, is now providing power.
The city’s own generating capacity is now listed at 299 megawatts, according to the Alberta Electrical System Operator.
