International Women’s Day was observed in Medicine Hat on Tuesday months after the election of the city’s first female mayor but also for the first time, a majority of council members are women.

All nine council members sent out a message on social media with the message that citizens should discard stereo types and “break the bias.”

“It’s opportune to reflect on the successes of all the amazing women in Medicine Hat who’ve accomplished many great things, to take a moment to recognize that and challenge our biases,” Mayor Linnsie Clark told the News on Tuesday.

Clark was one of five women to wins seats in the October election, which is equal to the total number of women previously elected in council elections dating back more than a century.
