Medicine Hat’s Veiner Centre, in partnership with the Community Foundation of Southeastern Alberta, is inviting people aged 50-plus to take part in a free tax clinic being offered at the Strathcona Centre from now until April 29.
“The last time we ran a tax clinic at Veiner Centre was before the (2013) flood, so we’re pretty excited to bring it back,” Larry Mathieson, the CEO of Kerby Centre – Veiner Centre’s operator – told the News.
“One of the key reasons we run a tax clinic is (because) seniors need their taxes up to date to be eligible for other benefits. So, we see it as a bridge to helping seniors get any other benefits they may be eligible for.”
There’s no cost to access the volunteer-run clinic, through which they can file tax returns provided they are not filing self-employment, business or rental income, capital gains, losses or bankruptcy.
So far, Mathieson and the teams at the Veiner and Strathcona centres have received positive community feedback about the tax clinic.
“I think we’re getting good reception,” said Mathieson. “We have a number of volunteers and we still have capacity, so if people are interested, give us a call (at 403-529-8364) or connect with us through our website.”
The tax clinic runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday to Friday. Appointments are required.
