Carabins upset top-seeded Thunderbirds in U Sports women’s hockey quarterfinals

ELMIRA — The Montreal Carabins upset the top-seeded UBC Thunderbirds 4-3 in quarterfinal play Friday at the U Sports women’s hockey championship at the Woolwich Memorial Centre.

Jade Picard and Audrey-Anne Veillette scored in the shootout for the eighth-seeded Carabins. Karine Sandilands was the lone UBC player to beat netminder Maude Desroches in the extra session.

Janelle Mentor, Chloe Duchesneau and Juliette Rolland tallied in regulation for Montreal.

Sandilands, Grace Elliott and Jaylyn Morris scored for UBC.

Ottawa and UNB were scheduled to play in the other quarterfinal later Friday.

The winner will play Montreal in the semifinal on Saturday. Concordia will play Guelph in the other semifinal.
