MILAN — Canada will have its sights set on multiple podium finishes today, with a potential storybook ending brewing in figure skating on Day 5 of the Milan Cortina Olympics.
Piper Gilles and Paul Poirier enter the free dance portion of the competition in third place after Monday’s rhythm dance portion, behind former Canadian skater Laurence Fournier Beaudry, now representing France with Guillaume Cizeron, and American three-time world champions Madison Chock and Evan Bates.
And it could be the final competitive skate for Toronto’s Gilles and Poirier, of Unionville, Ont., who are skating in their 15th seasons and are both 34 years old. These Games are the third of their careers.
Meanwhile, speedskater Laurent Dubreuil will look to reach the podium again in the men’s 1,000 metres after winning silver in Beijing in 2022.
The 33-year-old from Lévis, Que., enters the Milan Cortina Games as an eight-time medallist at the world single-distance championships, including three golds and two silvers.
In men’s curling action, Brad Jacobs’ rink opens play against Germany in round-robin play. And freestyle skier Maia Schwinghammer — whose father became an online sensation at the Games after a CBC reporter interviewed him on the streets of Livigno, Italy — makes her debut in the women’s moguls final.
