Canada’s women’s hockey team set to open Olympic defence; Weidemann eyes podium

By Canadian Press on February 7, 2026.

MILAN — Day 1 at the Milan Cortina Olympics features Canada’s women’s hockey team scheduled to open its gold-medal defence against Switzerland, after its original opener against Finland was postponed.

But in concerning news, Switzerland’s team was isolating in Milan on Friday after one player was diagnosed with norovirus, the same stomach illness that forced the Finland postponement.

Ottawa speedskater Isabelle Weidemann races in the women’s 3,000 metres today, looking to add to her three Olympic medals from the 2022 Beijing Games.

In alpine skiing, Toronto’s James (Jack) Crawford is among the contenders in the men’s downhill at the Stelvio Ski Centre in Bormio after posting the fastest training run Friday.

Canada’s mixed doubles curling team of Jocelyn Peterman and Brett Gallant looks to rebound from a loss to the United States as it faces Britain and Estonia in round-robin play.

Calgary’s Abigail Strate enters the women’s ski jumping normal hill event as a medal contender for Canada.
