Maple Leafs fire assistant coach Marc Savard as Toronto’s power play continues to struggle

By Canadian Press on December 22, 2025.

TORONTO (AP) — The Toronto Maple Leafs fired assistant coach Marc Savard on Monday after losing three games in a row nearing the midway point of the NHL season.

Savard, a 48-year-old former player, was in charge of the power play, which ranked last in the league at 13.3% with four shorthanded goals allowed. There was no immediate indication of the organization making an outside hire to replace him on coach Craig Berube’s staff.

Savard was in his second season with the Leafs, joining them when Berube was hired in 2024. He previously served as an assistant with the Calgary Flames and St. Louis Blues and coached the junior Windsor Spitfires of the Ontario Hockey League.

Toronto has lost 20 of its first 35 games, is in last place in the Atlantic Division and sits one point ahead of the bottom of the Eastern Conference.
