Stolz wins speedskating World Cup gold, Canada’s Bloemen, Maltais bronze in Calgary

CALGARY — Speedskating star Jordan Stolz of the United States won gold and Canadians Ted-Jan Bloemen and Valérie Maltais both earned bronze Friday at Calgary’s World Cup.
Stolz, a two-time world champion in the 500, 1,000 and 1,500 metres, outduelled Dutch archrival Jenning De Boo at the Olympic Oval by just over a tenth of a second in the men’s 1,000.
Calgary’s Bloemen laid down an Oval track record in the men’s 5k that was later beaten by victor Casey Dawson of the U.S. and runner-up Sander Eitrem of Norway.
Valérie Maltais of La Baie, Que., took bronze in the women’s 3,000 after her silver medal in the season-opener in Salt Lake City.
Joy Beune of the Netherlands won the women’s 3k. Dutch women finished first to fourth in the women’s 1,000 metres with Femke Kok emerging the victor.
Racing continues Saturday and Sunday.
