VANCOUVER — Canadian international Dilon Heyliger left his mark at the inaugural Canada Super 60 cricket tournament at B.C. Place Stadium.
Heyliger took four wickets at the cost of just nine runs to lead the Brampton Blitz to an eight-wicket win over Montreal Royal Tigers in Monday’s championship game. The 35-year-old finished as the tournament’s top wicket-taker, claiming 13 in seven matches at an average cost of 11.76 runs.
The competition featured six men’s and two women’s teams drawn from international and domestic talent.
Super 60 matches last about 90 minutes with each team batting for 10 overs (60 balls), making for all-action contests with batters swinging for the boundary in search of runs. In contrast, the Global T20 Canada tournament, which debuted in Brampton, Ont., in 2018, features the 20-over version of the game.
Heyliger led a Brampton bowling attack that limited Montreal to 69 runs in eight overs.
Former Bangladesh captain Shakib Al Hasan, with 29 runs off 12 balls, and Canadian Dilpreet Bajwa, with 18 runs off eight deliveries, were the only batters to reach double figures for the Tigers.
David Wiese, a South African-born former Namibian international, and South African-born Scottish international Chris Greaves each took three wickets for Brampton.
England’s James Vince (34 runs) and New Zealand’s Martin Guptill (23 runs) led Brampton’s victory chase.
Brampton advanced to the final with nine-wicket victory over the Mississauga Masters. In the other semifinal, Montreal downed the Vancouver Kings.
Wiese was named the tournament’s MVP, scoring 149 runs and taking nine wickets. South African Leus du Plooy of the Mississauga Masters was the top batsman with 238 runs in six innings.
