Reds pitcher Hunter Greene holds Cubs hitless until Suzuki’s two-out double in the 7th

By Canadian Press on September 18, 2025.

CINCINNATI (AP) — Cincinnati Reds right-hander Hunter Greene lost his no-hit bid against the Chicago Cubs when Seiya Suzuki doubled with two outs in the seventh inning on Thursday night.

Greene was trying to become the first Reds pitcher to toss a no-hitter since Wade Miley on May 7, 2021, in a 3-0 win over the Guardians.

The Reds are leading 1-0. Greene has seven strikeouts and one walk. He has thrown 82 pitches.

Greene retired the first 12 batters he faced before Moises Ballesteros reached on a fielding error by shortstop Elly De La Cruz to begin the fifth.

Cincinnati pitchers have thrown 17 no-hitters in franchise history.

The Cubs went nearly 50 years without being no-hit until the Phillies’ Cole Hamels did it in 2015. They have only been held hitless seven times in their history.

They clinched a postseason berth with an 8-4 victory in Pittsburgh on Wednesday and popped champagne in the clubhouse afterward. The celebration continued when they arrived in Cincinnati later that night, according to manager Craig Counsell.

This story has been corrected to show that Seiya Suzuki got the Cubs’ first hit in the seventh inning. A previous version stated it was Moises Ballesteros.
