Goalkeeper Ederson leaves City after 8 years to join Fenerbahce and could be replaced by Donnarumma

MANCHESTER, England (AP) — Brazil goalkeeper Ederson Moraes has left Manchester City after eight years to join Turkish club Fenerbahce and is set to be replaced in the squad by Gianluigi Donnarumma.

Ederson won 18 trophies at City after joining from Benfica in 2017, and helped to revolutionize the goalkeeper position with his ability to play the ball out from the back and pick out attackers with long passes.

The move to Fenerbahce was announced Tuesday, hours after European soccer’s summer transfer window shut in England. It is still open in Turkey.

“I arrived in Manchester eight years ago full of hope,” the 31-year-old Ederson said, “but I could not have predicted such a beautiful time together.”

City director of football Hugo Viana added that Ederson’s “skills and bravery have been crucial in helping City play the beautiful football we have seen.”

His departure to Fenerbahce, subject to international clearance, is likely to pave the way for the arrival of Donnarumma from Paris Saint-Germain — a switch in goalkeeper that seems at odds with the playing approach of the once-dominant Premier League team.

Donnarumma is one of the world’s best shot-stoppers and was arguably the best goalkeeper in Europe last season because of his inspired form in the Champions League’s knockout stage that helped PSG become European champion for the first time.

However, the Italy international’s strength isn’t passing the ball out from the back — typically a key requisite for goalkeepers in teams coached by Pep Guardiola.
