PITTSBURGH (AP) — Andrew McCutchen hit a milestone three-run home run in the fifth inning to help the Pittsburgh Pirates defeat the Miami Marlins 5-2 on Wednesday.
McCutchen’s shot to left-center field off Cal Quantrill was his sixth of the season and 241st in 12 seasons with the Pirates, moving him past Hall of Famer Roberto Clemente into third place on the franchise’s career list. Willie Stargell (475) and Ralph Kiner (301) are ahead of McCutchen.
The homer put the Pirates ahead 4-0 after they scored a run on catcher Nick Fortes’ throwing error in the second inning. Pittsburgh took two of three in the series, went 6-3 on the homestand and sent the Marlins to their eighth loss in 10 games.
Bailey Falter (5-3) allowed one run — on rookie Heriberto Hernandez’s first career homer — on five hits in 5 1/3 innings. The left-hander is 4-0 with a 1.61 ERA in eight starts since the beginning of May.
David Bednar pitched a 1-2-3 ninth for his ninth save in as many chances.
PHILLIES 7, CUBS 2
PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Kyle Schwarber homered, Alec Bohm hit a solo shot and had four RBIs, and Jesús Luzardo struck out 10 in six innings to lead Philadelphia to a victory over Chicago.
The Phillies rebounded from a 1-5 road trip (and losers of nine of 10 games overall) to take two of three at home from the Cubs. Offense that’s been punchless this month perked up against the Cubs with five extra-base hits. Nick Castellanos also knocked his first triple of the year, and Max Kepler and Trea Turner both doubled.
The slugging returned to Philadelphia. So did a dazzling outing from Luzardo.
Luzardo didn’t walk a batter in this one, allowed only one run and recorded his fourth double-digit strikeout game in his 15th start.
Max Lazar worked two innings of relief and Michael Mercado tossed a scoreless ninth for the Phillies.
GUARDIANS 11, REDS 2
CLEVELAND (AP) — Carlos Santana slugged his sixth career grand slam and Cleveland beat Cincinnati, snapping the Reds’ five-game win streak and denying manager Terry Francona a season sweep of his former team.
Santana’s third-inning slam came on the 15th anniversary of his major league debut. It was his eighth homer this season and made it 5-0, helping Cleveland salvage the finale of this three-game series. Francona’s Reds swept the Guardians in three games at Cincinnati last month.
The Guardians had five straight hits to open a four-run sixth for a nine-run lead, including a three-run homer by Lane Thomas. Cleveland’s 11 runs were a season high.
Logan Allen (4-4) went six innings and gave up solo homers to Elly De La Cruz and TJ Friedl. He struck out six.
Nick Lodolo (4-5) lasted only 3 1/3 innings, giving up six runs.
BRAVES 6, BREWERS 2
MILWAUKEE (AP) — Spencer Schwellenbach pitched his first career complete game, Michael Harris II and Ronald Acuña Jr. each hit two-run homers and Atlanta beat Milwaukee.
Atlanta took two of three at Milwaukee, its first series victory since winning two of three at Boston from May 16-18.
Schwellenbach (5-4) allowed five hits, struck out nine and walked none while throwing 105 pitches, 76 for strikes. He has worked at least six innings in seven consecutive starts.
BLUE JAYS 5, ST. LOUIS 2
ST. LOUIS (AP) — Ernie Clement homered and Spencer Turnbull worked two scoreless innings to win his Toronto debut as the Blue Jays beat the St. Louis Cardinals 5-2 on Wednesday for a three-game sweep.
Clement finished with three hits but did not take the field in the ninth at third base after suffering an apparent leg injury. He dove for a grounder in the eighth and needed some attention but finished the inning.
Clement’s fourth homer gave Toronto a 5-2 lead in the fifth. Toronto won for the seventh time in eight games and is 22-10 over its last 32.
Turnbull (1-0) worked the sixth and seventh innings, striking out two. He signed with Toronto last month and began the season in the minors. Turnbull played five seasons with Detroit and was with Philadelphia last year. Yariel Rodríguez pitched the ninth for his first major league save.
The Cardinals lost their fourth straight.
DIAMONDBACKS 5, MARINERS 2
PHOENIX (AP) — Eugenio Suárez hit a go-ahead grand slam, Eduardo Rodriguez pitched into the seventh inning and Arizona swept a three-game series from Seattle with a win.
Arizona trailed 2-0 after five innings but scored five runs in the sixth for a second straight game to take control.
Corbin Carroll and Ketel Marte led off the sixth with back-to-back singles, Josh Naylor walked with one out and then Suárez launched a slider 410 feet off Bryan Woo (5-4) into the left-center seats to give the D-backs a 4-2 lead.
It was Suárez’s third grand slam of the season. Pavin Smith added a solo homer later in the inning for a 5-2 advantage.
ANGELS 6, ATHLETICS 5
ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — Jo Adell homered in a wild six-run sixth inning and Los Angeles overcame two homers by Brent Rooker to beat the Athletics and sweep a three-game series.
Adell’s 13th homer was his sixth in nine games.
His two-run shot capped a rally that saw Athletics starter JP Sears ejected after giving way to reliever Grant Holman (4-2) with one out. Holman walked Mike Trout on a 3-2 pitch he believed was a strike to load the bases. Holman hit Taylor Ward to bring in a run and Jorge Soler followed with a two-RBI single. That’s when Sears was tossed after yelling animatedly from the dugout.
Osvaldo Bido relieved Holman and Travis d’Arnaud gave the Angels the lead with a sacrifice fly. Adell followed with homer.
Rooker’s two-run homer in the seventh, his 15th this season, cut the Angels’ lead to 6-5. He had four hits including a double. He scored three runs and drove in three.
Kyle Hendricks (4-6) went six innings and gave up three runs, two earned, on seven hits. Reid Detmers pitched a perfect ninth for his second save.
DODGERS 5, PADRES 2
SAN DIEGO (AP) — Teoscar Hernández broke a sixth-inning tie with a three-run homer and Michael Conforto also went deep for Los Angeles Dodgers, who beat San Diego to take two of three games in the first series this season between the NL West rivals.
The defending World Series champions bounced back from Tuesday night’s 11-1 loss, a rout so bad for the pitching-strapped Dodgers that utilityman Kiké Hernández pitched the final 2 1/3 innings after starter Matt Sauer threw 111 pitches.
Rookie right-hander Ben Casparius got through four innings in his second start of the season, with just one rough patch. He allowed five straight Padres to reach in the second but they got just one run, thanks largely to center fielder Andy Pages throwing out Gavin Sheets at the plate on a 99 mph throw on the fly to catcher Will Smith.
After allowing three straight singles, Casparius walked consecutive batters, including No. 9 hitter Martín Maldonado with the bases loaded. Fernando Tatis Jr. then flied out on the first pitch to end the threat.
ORIOLES 10, TIGERS 1
BALTIMORE (AP) — Jordan Westburg hit a three-run homer during a seven-run eighth inning and the Baltimore Orioles pulled away to a 10-1 victory over the Detroit Tigers on Wednesday night.
Zach Eflin (6-2) allowed a run over 6 2/3 innings for his third consecutive victory. Keegan Akin struck out pinch-hitter Jahmai Jones to strand two and escape the seventh when it was a one-run game.
Ramón Urías hit a two-run shot off Casey Mize (5-3) before the Orioles got going against the Tigers’ bullpen.
Colt Keith provided the Tigers’ run on an RBI double that struck high off the out-of-town scoreboard in right.
Mize (6-2) struck out seven and walked two over 5 1/3 innings.
METS 5, NATIONALS 0
NEW YORK (AP) — David Peterson pitched a six-hitter for the first nine-inning complete game of his professional career, and New York beat Washington for their fifth straight win.
Brandon Nimmo homered twice and Juan Soto went deep against his former team for the second consecutive night. Pete Alonso put the Mets ahead in the first inning with his major league-high 63rd RBI, his 20th in the past 10 games.
NL East-leading New York moved a season-best 20 games over .500 at 44-24.
Peterson (5-2) won his third decision in a row, striking out six and walking none in a game that took just 2 hours, 16 minutes. He threw 106 pitches and lowered his ERA to 2.49.
RED SOX 4, RAYS 3
BOSTON (AP) — Rookie Marcelo Mayer hit two of Boston’s four solo home runs and the Red Sox outlasted Tampa Bay.
Abraham Toro added a go-ahead homer in the fifth inning, and Jarren Duran also hit one to help Boston earn its second series win over the Rays this season.
Walker Buehler (5-4) allowed three runs off six hits over seven innings and struck out seven to earn his fifth victory since coming off the injured list on May 20. Aroldis Chapman pitched a scorelless ninth to get his 12th save.
Yandy Díaz had a two-run homer for Tampa Bay. Zack Littell (6-6) lasted six innings, yielding eight hits and striking out six.
