Homan wins third straight to start Hearts, Sturmay earns comeback victory

THUNDER BAY, Ont. — Defending champion Rachel Homan won a third straight game to open the Scotties Tournament of Hearts with a 9-7 win over Alberta’s Kayla Skrlik.

Homan was the lone unbeaten team atop Pool A at the Canadian women’s curling championship.

Skrlik, Saskatchewan’s Nancy Martin, B.C.’s Corryn Brown and Alberta’s Selena Sturmay were bunched at 2-1.

Martin lost 7-6 in an extra end to Brown and Sturmay recovered from an early 5-1 deficit to beat Northern Ontario’s Krista McCarville 10-6.

New Brunswick’s Melissa Adams doubled Nunvaut’s Julia Weagle to get to 1-1. McCarville dropped to 0-3 and Nunavut to 0-2.

The 18-team field is divided into two pools with the top three in each advancing to the championship round. The four Page playoff teams will emerge from that group of six.
