Parent grateful for community support after soccer coach — and $40K — disappear

By Canadian Press on February 13, 2025.

EDMONTON — An Edmonton mother says she’s thrilled to see the community rally to support her son’s soccer team after its coach dropped out of contact and tens of thousands of dollars vanished.

Lauren Scorgie says the Selects Football Club has been working for more than two years to raise money to travel to a tournament in Las Vegas.

She says parents found out on Monday the team’s coach allegedly hadn’t registered them for the event or booked hotel rooms.

Scorgie says nobody has been able to contact the coach and $40,000 is gone.

She says a GoFundMe started for the team has raised more than $50,000 and that community groups, businesses and sports organizations have come together in support.

Edmonton police say they have been investigating a fraud complaint related to a youth sports team since Monday.
