NEW YORK (AP) – The Professional Women’s Hockey League’s New York Sirens have signed No. 1 pick Sarah Fillier to a one-year contract.

The team announced the deal Friday, nearly four months after taking the Canadian national team and Princeton University forward with the first choice in the PWHL draft.

“When Sarah steps on the ice, she brings an energy that ignites both her teammates and fans alike,” general manager Pascal Daoust said in a statement. “Her game combines passion, excitement, growth, and a relentless pursuit of excellence.”

Fillier, 24, helped Canada win gold at the 2022 Beijing Olympics. She had been playing college hockey at Princeton since 2018.

“Playing in the PWHL will be a dream come true, and I cannot wait to make New York my home,” said Fillier, who hails from Georgetown, Ont. “I am excited to get on the ice with my teammates in front of the best fans in the league. I want to help elevate women’s sport to new heights and make girls across the world realize their dreams of playing professional hockey are within reach.”

Fillier joins the Sirens for the PWHL’s second season. New York finished last among six teams in the inaugural season with just nine wins in 24 games.

The Sirens will play the vast majority of their home games at the New Jersey Devils’ arena in Newark after splitting time between three sites across the area.
