PARIS – Canadian sprint canoeists Katie Vincent and Sloan MacKenzie will race for gold after finishing first in a women’s doubles 500-metre semifinal Friday. Vincent, of Mississauga, Ont., and MacKenzie, of Windsor Junction, N.S., finished in one minute 55.34 seconds. The Canadian duo took an early lead before Daniela Cociu and Maria Olarasu of Moldova temporarily pulled ahead in the tightly contested race where several boats battled for top of the field. Vincent and MacKenzie set an Olympic record in their heat on Tuesday with a time of 1:54.16, a time that was topped by China’s Shixiao Xu and Mengya Sun in the early semifinal Friday morning when they finished in 1:53.73. Friday is set to be a busy day for Canadian paddlers, with kayakers Courtney Stott and Natalie Davison competing in the women’s doubles 500-metre semifinals, while Pierre-Luc Poulin and Simon McTavish race on the men’s side.
