Canada misses podium in women’s 10m at Diving World Cup in Montreal

MONTREAL – Canada’s Caeli McKay finished fifth and Celina Toth was seventh in the women’s 10-metre platform individual final at the World Aquatics Diving World Cup on Sunday. Chinese divers Quan Hongchan and Chen Yuxi won gold and silver. Britain’s Andrea Spendolini Sirieix took bronze. McKay, a 23-year-old from Calgary, produced a cumulative score of 320.95, 36.85 points short of the podium. The 31-year-old Toth, from Victoria, finished with 307.15. McKay was in fourth place after the third round, but fell to eighth after scoring a 45.50 on a back three-and-a-half somersaults tuck. She scored a 76.80 on her final dive to move up three spots. McKay placed third in the preliminary round on Friday. She teamed with Ottawa’s Kate Miller for a fifth-place finish in the 10-metre synchro competition on Saturday. Earlier Sunday, China’s Wang Zongyuan won gold in the men’s three-metre springboard final. Australia’s Li Shixin took silver and Germany’s Moritz Wesemann picked up bronze. Victoria’s Bryden Hattie was ninth. Canadians Mia Vallee and Pamela Ware were scheduled to dive in the women’s individual three-metre springboard final later Sunday, followed by Nathan Zsombor-Murray in the men’s 10-metre platform. The team event final was scheduled for the evening. The competition is Montreal’s first senior diving event since 2020 and the second of three World Cup meetings this year. The first was held in Xi’an, China in April. The top 18 athletes in individual events and top eight teams in synchronized and team events will qualify for the World Cup Super Final this August in Berlin.
