QMJHL roundup: Phoenix rise in third period, blank Mooseheads 3-0

SHERBROOKE, Que. – Cole Huckins, Joshua Roy and Jacob Melanson scored third-period goals and Olivier Adam stopped all 22 shots fired at him, as the Sherbrooke Phoenix outbattled the visiting Halifax Mooseheads 3-0 in Quebec Major Junior Hockey League action on Saturday.

The game was scoreless until Huckins’ goal at 6:02 of the third. Roy made it 2-0 at 10:18 and Melanson scored into an empty net with 55 seconds left on the clock to ice the victory for the Phoenix (39-12-3-2), who started the week listed No. 6 in the Canadian Hockey League’s top 10 rankings.

With the win, the Phoenix moved into sole possession of first place in the Western Conference, one point ahead of the idle Gatineau Olympiques.

Netminder Mathis Rousseau stopped 36 of 38 shots for the Mooseheads (39-9-4-3).

Sam Oliver, Tristan Roy, Xavier Fortin and Tyler Peddle scored for the Voltigeurs (22-28-4-1), who led 2-0 after the first period and were tied 3-3 heading into the third.

BAIE-COMEAU, Que. – Maxime Coursol scored twice and Luke Coughlin added two assists as the visiting Rimouski Oceanic defeated the Baie-Comeau Drakkar 5-1.

Alexander Gaudio, Julien Beland and Shawn Pearson also scored for the Oceanic (31-23-2-1), who outshot the Drakkar 38-24.

Isaac Dufort scored on the power play for the Drakkar (24-29-3-2).

BOISBRIAND, Que. – Alex Carr scored at 18:54 of the third period to list the visiting Rouyn-Noranda Huskies past the Blainville-Boisbriand Armada 5-4.

Tristan Allard also scored twice for the Huskies (33-17-4-3), while Mathis Perron and Edouard Cournoyer netted singles.

Justin Carbonneau, Alex Blais, Thomas Paquet and Xavier Sarrasin scored for the Armada (20-30-6-2), who trailed 2-1 after the first but led 3-2 heading into the final frame.

EAGLES 3 SEA DOGS 1

SYDNEY, N.S. – Trevor Thurston and Cam Squires scored third-period goals to snap a 1-1 deadlock as the Cape Breton Eagles edged the visiting Saint John Sea Dogs 3-1.

Antoine Roy also scored for the Eagles (22-29-3-1), who led 1-0 after the first period and were tied 1-1 heading into the third.

Pavel Simek scored for the Sea Dogs (20-34-1-1).

TITAN 5 CATARACTES 4 (SO)

BATHURST, N.B. – Robert Orr scored the lone goal of a three-round shootout to lift the Acadie-Bathurst Titan to a 5-4 victory over the visiting Shawinigan Cataractes.

Joseph Henneberry and Donovan Arsenault each scored twice for the Titan (16-31-5-3) in regulation.

Stephane Jr. Huard scored twice for the Cataractes (24-27-2-3), while Felix Lacerte and Lorenzo Canonica netted singles.
