jtubb@medicinehatnews.com A long week for the Medicine Hat Tigers ended with a drawn out loss Saturday in Edmonton. The Tigers surrendered six unanswered Oil Kings goals as they lost 6-1 at Rogers Place, ending their win streak at nine games. Saturday’s contest was the last of a four game in five days stretch for the Tigers who beat the Red Deer Rebels 8-4 Friday at Co-op Place. The Oil Kings had five multi-point efforts, led by Carter Sotheran tallying a goal and three assists and Landon Hanson scoring twice, adding a helper. With the win, coming in the Oil Kings first game of the week, they prevented the Tigers from clinching the Central division. An opening period with four power plays total saw the Tigers get on the board first. At the end of a man advantage, with a delayed call coming against Edmonton for a six-on-four, Bryce Pickford fired home his 43rd of the season, giving him goals in eight straight games. Yaroslav Bryzgalov and Jonas Woo had the assists on Pickford’s goal, giving him the most goals by a CHL defenceman in a single season since 2000. He has the fourth-most goals by a CHL defenceman in a single season, seven back of the all-time record of 50 held by Lawrence Sacharuk of the Saskatoon Blades. Bryzgalov’s assist extends his point streak to five games, Woo’s helper pushes his to 10 games and Pickford extends his streak of points to nine games. The Oil Kings responded on a power play of their own, Ethan MacKenzie scoring while five-on-three to make it a 1-1 score after 20 minutes. Edmonton led the scoring in the second period, as Hanson scored4:25 into the period after jamming home a rebound. With 7:57 left in the period, Carter Sotheran scored on a net-front tap in to make it a 3-1 Oil Kings lead after 40 minutes. The Oil Kings squashed any comeback effort from the Tigers in the third period, scoring three goals for the 6-1 win. Aaron Obobaifo scored 3:42 into the final frame for his first of the night. He struck again later in the frame, on an Edmonton five-on-three power play with 1:07 left in the contest. Edmonton capped the night off, scoring on the second half of the power play, with Hanson tacking on his second of the game. Parker Snell picked up the win in the Oil King net, making 25 saves. Across the ice in the Tiger crease, Jordan Switzer also stopped 25 shots. Edmonton outshot the Tigers 31-26 and finished 2-5 on the power play. The Tigers were 1-5 on the man advantage. Medicine Hat had a chance Saturday night to jump past the Prince Albert Raiders for first in the Eastern conference, who they sit tied with stop the conference, with the East division champs losing 3-1 to the Rebels in Red Deer. Saturday’s loss was the second time this week the Raiders have lost to the Rebels, falling 4-3 in Prince Albert on Wednesday. The Raiders, who have a game and a win in hand on the Tigers, finish a three-in-three week on Sunday when they head to Edmonton. The Tigers (45-10-5-3) are off until Tuesday when they face Regina for the last time this season, hosting the Pats on Tuesday at Co-op Place. 17
