Cubs score 14 goals in pair of wins, 14-game win streak leading push for first in HJHL

The Medicine Hat Cubs picked up where they left off from the holiday break.

The South division leaders rattled off a pair of wins to extend their franchise-record win streak to 14 games. They blanked the High River Flyers 5-0 Saturday before beating the Ponoka Stampeders 9-2 Sunday.

Hudson Corbett stopped all 14 shots in the win Saturday, recording a shutout in his HJHL debut.

Captain Kyle Woolridge had two goals and five points in the win. Mason Osinski had two goals and Jesse Klimosko had a goal and an assist.

On Sunday, Josiah Jackson had two goals and an assist. Woolridge and Connor Chapman had a goal and three assists, Makhi Carriere had a goal and two assists, Nolen Sutherland tallied a goal and an assist and all three of Blake Girard, Keynan Cairns and Austin Derzaph scored. Marlo DeRosa made 27 saves for his 13th win, tying him for the league lead.

Woolridge’s nine-point weekend propelled him into the league lead in scoring with 27 goals and 52 points in 28 games. He is eight points up on Sylvan Lake Wrangler Maddex Bignell.

The Cubs’ captain, who already holds the franchise’s goals record, pushed himself into second on the franchise’s all-time points list with 216, sitting 16 points back of Kyle Funk for the lead.

The Cubs (21-6-1) lead the South division with 43 points and are two points back of Sylvan Lake (21-5-3) for first in the league with a game in hand.

They are on the road for the next two games, facing a pair of divisional opponents. The Cubs face the Strathmore Wheatland Kings (17-10-1) on Friday and the Cochrane Generals (17-10-1) on Saturday.

Their next home game is Jan. 18 when they host the Generals at the Kinplex for a 3 p.m. contest.
