Cubs’ win streak hits 10 games with weekend sweep

The Medicine Hat Cubs continued their winning ways this weekend, giving themselves more room atop the South division.

The Cubs swept their two-game weekend on the road, beating the Airdrie Thunder 4-3 Friday and topping the Rocky Rams 4-2 Saturday to extend their win streak to 10 games.

Nolen Sutherland scored twice in the win Friday, Josiah Jackson had a pair of goals with an assist. Marlo DeRosa made 27 saves.

The Cubs had four different goal scorers in Saturday’s win as Cole Fisher, captain Kyle Woolridge, Sutherland and Jackson all found the back of the net. Defenceman Austin Derzaph had a pair of assists.

DeRosa finished with 36 stops for his 10th win on the year, putting him tied for second in the HJHL in wins. He has recorded wins in six straight starts, posting two shutouts along the way.

Meyer Gaume of the Red Deer Vipers leads the league with 11 wins.

The pair of weekend wins gives the Cubs (17-6-1) some breathing room atop the South division, leading the way with 35 points in 24 games. They sit four points up on the Strathmore Wheatland Kings (15-9-1) and five points ahead of the Coaldale Copperheads (14-9-2) and the Okotoks Bisons (14-9-2).

After three road games to open December, the Cubs return to the Kinplex this weekend with an opportunity to extend their lead on the Copperheads and Bisons. The Cubs host the Copperheads on Friday and the Bisons on Saturday for their last two games before the HJHL’s Holiday Break.

Both games get underway at 7:30 p.m. at the Kinplex.

Woolridge sets

new Cubs record

The Cubs’ captain set a new modern era club record in Saturday’s win over Red Deer.

His goal was his 120th in the HJHL, passing Kyle Funk for first on the franchise’s all-time goals scored list. He also recorded point No. 200, putting him fourth all-time in modern team history. He sits 32 points back of Funk for the franchise record.
