From winning the all-star game to taking hold of the South division, the Medicine Hat Cubs had themselves quite the weekend on the road.
The Cubs were represented by six players at the HJHL’s all-star game Saturday in Strathmore, with the South division beating the North division 8-5.
Captain Kyle Woolridge, forwards Mason Osinski, Nolen Sutherland, defenceman Blake Girard and Austin Derzaph and goaltender Marlo DeRosa all represented the Cubs and the South division. Head coach Trent Derzaph and assistant coach Johnny Stehr were behind the South division bench.
All six participated in the skills competitions, with Derzaph and Girard competing in the passing challenge, Woolridge in the shooting competition, Suthlerand in the hardest shot challenge, Osinski in the fastest skater and DeRosa, as well as other Cubs, competing in the shootout competition.
In the all-star game, Osinski finished with the game winner, tallying a goal and an assist. Sutherland also had a goal and an assist, Girard scored as well and DeRosa made 10 saves.
The Cubs’ weekend was capped off with a 4-3, overtime win Sunday in Coaldale over the Copperheads to take over first place of the South division. The win also extended their win streak to eight games.
Woolridge scored twice, Jesse Klimosko added a solo mark and Josiah Jackson scored the overtime winner on a power play 40 seconds into the extra frame.
The Cubs (15-6-1) sit one point ahead of the Copperheads in the division, with a game in hand. They are back on the road this weekend for a pair of North division matchups, facing the Airdrie Thunder and the Rocky Rams.
