sports@medicinehatnews.com@MedicineHatNews The Medicine Hat Tigers shook the B.C. blues with a win Wednesday. They’ll hope to shake a different kind of bug in the second half of the trip. They recorded their first win on the six-game trip with a 6-3 victory Wednesday at Prince George over the Cougars. It was a shorthanded win for the Tigers, skating with just 17 due to the late scratch of defenceman Bryce Pickford. The Tigers’ captain was scratched due to illness, the same reason Cam Parr was out of the lineup. It’s an illness they’ve dealt with since heading to B.C. Starter Jordan Switzer led the Tigers’ effort in the win, making 32 saves for his sixth win of the season and 30th of his WHL career. Prince George out-shot the Tigers 35-27 with Medicine Hat winning the face-off battle 36-28. It’s the first time the Tigers had been outshot this season. They had six different goalscorers in the win, with Noah Davidson (fourth), Kyle Heger (second), Yaroslav Bryzgalov (fourth), Kade Stengrim (third), Liam Ruck (third) and Carter Cunningham (second) each finding the back of the net. The Tigers held the league’s best power play, entering the game, to two goals on six man advantages. Entering play tonight, the Tigers’ penalty kill sits sixth in the WHL at 84 per cent. The Tigers’ power play sits 11th at 21.4 per cent. Medicine Hat’s B.C. division road trip continues tonight in Kamloops against the Blazers. Kamloops sits one point back of the Victoria Royals for the lead of the B.C. division. The Blazers are led by rookie forward JP Hurlbert who leads the WHL in scoring with 11 goals and 24 points in 11 games. Hurlbert is NHL Draft eligible this season and signed with Kamloops as the season started, joining from Allen, Texas. Kamloops’ power play sits sixth in the WHL (26.7 per cent) and their penalty kill sits in the bottom six at 71.9 per cent. On Saturday the Tigers will get a look at the newly renovated Prospera Place in Kelowna, home of the 2026 Memorial Cup host Rockets. Kelowna enters play Friday in ninth place in the Western conference, picking up four wins on the season. Star forward Tij Iginla, who played just 21 games last season due to injury, has been held to just one game since returning from Utah Mammoth’s camp. The B.C. division road trip finishes up on Monday at Penticton against the Vees. 16
