Tigers in Yukon for Northern Lights Cup exhibition series

By Medicine Hat News on September 13, 2025.

The Medicine Hat Tigers kicked of the Yukon Showcase on Friday, taking on the Kelowna Rockets in Whitehorse.

Friday was the first of two games held at Takhini Arena in Whitehorse, the hometown of former Tigers’ forward Gavin McKenna and Ottawa Senators forward and Lethbridge Hurricanes alumni Dylan Cozens. Current Hurricanes’ forward Luke Cozens, in his third season in the WHL, also represents Whitehorse.

Due to a trio of forward injuries (Ethan Neutens, Shaeffer Gordon-Carroll and Luke Ruptash), the Tigers skated with 11 forwards and seven defensemen. Friday’s game was the preseason debut for a pair of overagers, forward Misha Volotovskii and defenceman Josh Van Mulligen. Markus and Liam Ruck also drew into their first preseason games off the fall, as did goaltender Carter Casey who was one of six. U.S. players to sign with the Tigers in the offseason.

The game was not complete by press time, full results can be found at medicinehatnews.com/sports. The two teams face-off again on Saturday in an 8 p.m. MST start that can be streamed for free on Victory+.

The teams are playing for the WHL Northern Lights Cup, specially commissioned for the WHL Yukon Showcase and created by Lumel Studios using stunning northern lights-series glasswork.

The Tigers will return from the two-set game with a week off before they kick off their 56th season hosting the Regina Pats on Sept. 20 at Co-op Place.
