jtubb@medicinehatnews.com@ReporterTubb The Monsignor McCoy Colts senior football team heads into the fall looking to continue taking strides. The Colts had a resurgence in 2024, finishing with an 8-3 record and falling one drive short of a South Zone title. They graduated a large class from that team but aren’t looking to rest on last year’s success, head coach Joel Krassman says. “We’re still a fairly young squad, but we’re an experienced squad,” Krassman said. “We had a good, solid group of Grade 10s last year playing on our starting lines and now they’ve filled into the roles really nicely. So a good group of youth and some good veterans filling the key roles, and we’re looking pretty good, we’re happy where we’re at.” Krassman, in his fourth season with the Colts, has continued asking his team to get better every day however they can. He says they’ve exponentially improved from his first season and still have room to keep on growing as they further build the program. “School hasn’t even kicked off yet, so we’re hoping to hit the hallways and get some more guys out,” Krassman said. “Even with the shorter numbers we’ve got, with the experience we got, we’re going to have some guys that are going to be running two ways and they’re just gonna have to step up.” The Colts kick off their season Friday at home against the Joane Cardinal-Schubert Ravens in a 5 p.m. contest at Methanex Bowl. They beat the Ravens last season and Krassman says they’re happy to start the season at home. “We did get a win on them last year and they sent a lot of guys to post secondary to senior bowl, so they have a good squad, they’re well coached,” Krassman said. “This will be a great test to kind of find out where we’re at, what we’re made of and see how we do in the heat.” With the players they have and the openings from graduating players, Krassman says they’ll turn to whoever is playing the best, over age or seniority, ‘the better player plays’ focus they’ve ran with the last few seasons. “If you’re out hustling guys and you’re putting in the work and you’ve been here ever since day one, you’re going to have the edge over somebody that’s not, and we hold true to that,” Krassman said. “So we’re going to see a mix of experienced talent, a mix of some younger talent, and we’ve told them, the success lies on the edge of living not too carefully, but not living recklessly, finding that balance and finding the switch, just seeing it and believing it and going for it.” 11
